Atomic Robot Bob™
aka ROBOB™
I fell in love with robots when I was very young, specifically, Robby the Robot and the "Lost in Space" robot (aka B-9). Since the age of five I was drawing pictures and making clay models of Robby and B-9. No toys of either robot was readily available when I was a kid, so either making my own or doing without were my only options.
Over the years I continued to develop and refine my artistic skills, learn new techniques and about new materials. My interests widened to other things, but I was always interested in one day making life-sized reproductions of these robots for myself.
However, as I developed as a concept designer, I decided that it would be more personally satisfying to design and create my own robot character. One that would be a tribute to the other two but completely original, so the idea of Atomic Robot Bob™ was born.
As the design and vision for RoBob™ started to gel, it also grew into a desire to create an entire world or back-story to go along with him; something that would be a call-back to the sci-fi films and TV shows of the 50s and 60s.
Though a little before my time, that period seems to have been, perhaps, a more innocent period when kids could tune in to radio and television programs for a sense of wonder and to fire their imaginations. These days, the Arts and truly creative thinking are increasingly marginalized in favor of overly market-researched and unimaginative 'product', created simply for consumption and nothing else. I hope to try to overcome that, to some degree, with this project and introduce something fun.
